Upper Montclair’s newest shop, Crystals + Candle, hosts a variety of different candle making classes where guests can mix and match their favorite scents to create their dream candles. The candles are infused with energetic crystals and gemstones, which, aside from their healing properties, make for some seriously stunning decorations. Whether you BYOB and make it a girl’s night, a unique date idea, or go on your own, you will walk out with a candle so uniquely your own, that you’ll want to light it right away. Stepping into Crystals + Candle, there is an aura of peace. It could be the sparkling crystals adorning the shelves, the sizeable amethysts beckoning you to the back of the shop, or it might simply be the smell of the bespoke candles. Either way, this new shop invites its customers to linger and explore.

It’s a sanctuary for the spiritual, but also a treasure trove of precious stones, incense, jewelry, figurines, and knick-knacks all carved from crystals, boasting various energies and properties. There’s a crystal to help calm anxieties, a crystal to nurture creativity, and well, you get the picture. Chances are, if you’re in the market for a crystal, then Crystals + Candle is going to have it. If you’re merely curious, you’ll find a warm smile to welcome you and walk you through the shop’s interesting artifacts.

But it’s the candle making experience that sets Crystals + Candle apart from any other crystal shop. After choosing a candle size, each candle maker chooses the scents — and in what ratio — they want to mix into their candle. It’s a simple process, but a deeply personal one, which means each candle is almost entirely unique to its respective guest.

After the scent is concocted, it’s onto the gemstones, keeping in mind what each crystal is used for. There is no specific limit to how many gems can be added, but it’s advised to be wary of overcrowding the candle with too many gems. Every candle is created right there on the spot, and customers don’t need to wait weeks and forget to return to pick up their merchandise. All candles go home at the end of the visit, and rest assured: we lit ours as soon as we got home.

Christian Velezcano, the 37-year-old Bloomfield resident and owner of Crystals + Candle, seemed delighted by the possibility of couples stopping by for a date night. “Bring your own bottle and make it fun,” he told The Montclair Girl at the ribbon-cutting ceremony this past Thursday. The young owner and his brother had been dreaming of opening Crystals + Candle for years and had scoured all over north New Jersey to find the right place. Initially, they weren’t sure if Montclair needed another crystal shop since there were already quite a few metaphysical shops in Essex County, several of which are close by in downtown Montclair. However, there was a void in Upper Montclair, and after walking around the space, the brothers knew this was where they wanted to be.
